Wakefield’s Halloween spooktacular

Wakefield CCC-ers had a frightfully good time at a ‘Ghouls and Guy Fawkes’ themed soirée on 29 October.
It was all treats, no tricks, as a record-breaking 15 bakers – some of them getting into the proper Halloween spirit with fancy dress – created an array of spooky, and sparkling, concoctions. As ever, the creativity was sky-high; show-stopping cakes included a chocolate spider cake, two ghoulish graveyard cakes and a bonfire cake topped with a (understandably) perturbed-looking sugarpaste Guy.
Just like poor Guy, the conversation was on fire. A particular hot topic was bakers’ very individual takes on comparable cakes. In Wakefield, we’re not too strict about members bringing similar cakes because we like seeing how different people approach the same basic concept. For example, four bakers tackled variations on the toffee apple theme, producing four very different cakes that had one thing in common: they were all delicious! We were particularly impressed with the spun sugar ‘bonfire’ on top of first-time baker, Ammelia’s cake.
A huge thank you to everyone who came along, and especially our hosts for the evening, the marvellous Tony and Jean Sykes from Wakefield’s number one deli, Deli Central. This is the second time we’ve held a CCC event here, and both times it’s got deservedly rave reviews from our members. As well as being a favourite destination for lunch, brunch and of course, cake, Deli Central also hosts highly recommended monthly wine-tasting evenings. Pre-Christmas specials include breakfasts with Santa and a festive sparkling wine-tasting. If you’re looking for a unique Christmas foodie experience in the Merrie City, be sure to pay them a visit!
Our next gathering is a special ‘Comfort and Joy’ themed event on 3 December. Only 12 places are available for bakers only, so book early to join in the festive fun!
