Newcastle upon Tyne – COCKTAIL HOUR

September 23, 2014 7:04 pm in New events, Newcastle Upon Tyne by Iona

Date: Monday 13 October 2014
Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Theme: Cocktail Hour
Inspired by this month's venue, it's cocktail hour! Who doesn't love a cocktail? The nights are getting darker, so cocktails from 6 are perfectly acceptable right?

Bring along a cakey version of your favourite cocktail. Be it a dirty martini or a cosmopolitan, they're all welcome at cake club this month. I've gone classic with G&T but I keep thinking there must be a good cake version of a Basil Grande somewhere. Anyone up for the challenge?

Venue: Near Central Station
Additional venue info: This venue has only been open a short while but they're welcoming us with open arms. It's a 5 minute walk from the metro and bus stops so easily within walking distance.

Unsurprisingly alongside your classic teas, coffees and soft drinks this venue also serves some pretty fine cocktails. If you don't have to drive, I'd definitely not so you can take advantage.

August 18, 2014 8:23 pm in New events, Newcastle Upon Tyne by Iona

Date: Monday 01 September 2014
Time: 6:00pm - 7:30pm
Theme: Late Summer picnic
Well the Sun may have disappeared for a while but we can still keep Summer going with this month's theme. We're looking for cakes suitable for a picnic, be it a taste of Summer or a cake that can live through a car journey in a picnic hamper! Bring out your favourite memories of trips out to the beach, although we may leave the sand where it belongs!
Venue: Ouseburn Valley
Additional venue info: We're lucky enough to have been invited to the newest venue in the Ouseburn and very delighted to attend we are too! Hot and cold beverages can be bought, but I'd advise any guests to bring cash for ease.

We're a little out of the way of the metro system, but the Quaylink Q2 bus will bring you nearby and there's plenty of parking close at hand too.

Newcastle Upon Tyne – Cake Surprise

June 24, 2014 7:19 pm in New events, Newcastle Upon Tyne by Iona

Date: Tuesday 15 July 2014
Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Theme: Cake Surprise
After a couple of requests for this theme from enthusiastic bakers I'm letting everyone have free reign with wonderful cake surprises. I'm guessing that it could be unusual flavours, decoration, colouring or anything else that comes to mind,

My brain is already buzzing with ideas for hiding patterns in cake. Remember the GBBO challenge? - You could try a Union Jack in cake form, or a beautiful ombre design.

I've staked my marker already promising a stripey cake, so if nothing else come along and have a laugh at how it turns out!

Venue: Near Central Station
Additional venue info: A lovely venue that serves tea, coffee, soft drinks and something a bit harder for those who need it after a potential cake challenge! Parking is a little limited directly nearby but car parks are not far away, public transport is close at hand

Newcastle – The Definition of Cake

May 7, 2014 8:13 pm in New events, Newcastle Upon Tyne by Iona

Date: Tuesday 27 May 2014
Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Theme: The definition of cake
Well... what is a cake? That's the question for this month's event. How do you define a cake, or indeed how far can you push a definition? Give it a go and come up with something a little bit different or bring the perfect example of cake.

...cheesecake, barm cake, gateaux, ice cream cake (do you dare?) potato cake.... a few different options tot think on, but I'm sure there'll be plenty more from you guys!

Venue: Near Grey's monument
Additional venue info: This month we have a literary venue providing us with a home for our cakey delights, teas coffees and light refreshments will be available to go with along with them.

The nearest metro is Monument, nearest car park is Eldon Square / Haymarket, there are bus stops all around the area so hopefully an easy event to get to.

Newcastle upon Tyne – Spring Forward

March 13, 2014 3:32 pm in New events, Newcastle Upon Tyne by Iona

Date: Monday 31 March 2014
Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Theme: Spring Forward
Well the weather has been gorgeous lately after the torrential start to the year and I thought we should celebrate Spring through the medium of cake.

Spring gives the opportunity to get out and about in the sunshine and dust off our trainers and bikes, promising ourselves that we'll get fit for Summer.

So we're looking at bold, bright, healthy(?) cakes that would look the part in a picnic or just bring a ray of sunshine to the party. Hopefully this will inspire some great ideas.

(The theme description gives a little hint towards our venue for this month, although I don't expect cakes to arrive by bike unless you're feeling brave!)

Venue: Our venue is based on the banks of the Tyne near the Ouseburn.
Additional venue info: The venue has a large free carpark next to it, and is linked to the city centre by public transport through the Quaylink Q2 bus service. There is unfortunately no metro station nearby however.

Refreshments can be bought at the the venue which will be serving teas, coffees and cold drinks, alcoholic or non-alcoholic

Newcastle upon Tyne – THE PRINTED WORD (EVENT FULL)

September 26, 2013 8:04 pm in New events, Newcastle Upon Tyne by Iona

Date: Wednesday 30 October 2013
Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Theme: THE PRINTED WORD
You can't say that much goes together so well as a hot cuppa, a piece of cake and a good book as we head in to Autumn (my thoughts anyway!). Therefore we're going a little print inspired for this CCC event, which also follows through from our chosen venue.

Cakes inspired by the printed word in books - Maybe a massive chocolate cake (Matilda), a Miss Havisham iced fruit cake (Great Expectations) or a cauldron cake (Harry Potter).

Don't worry too much about finding inspiration, you could just find a recipe in your favourite (cook) book and go with that!

Venue: We're heading slightly out of the city centre with a a trip over to the top end of the Ouseburn Valley, where an gallery venue is providing us with a home for the evening
Additional venue info: Refreshments in the form of tea and coffee will be available at the venue for a small donation
