NEWCASTLE – Come Rain or Shine it’s PICNIC TIME!

May 5, 2015 7:06 pm in New events, Newcastle Upon Tyne by Iona

Date: Monday 01 June 2015
Time: 6:00pm - 7:30pm
Theme: Come rain or shine it's picnic time
As I've managed to get a event date of the 1st June (and it's officially Summer in my mind), I think it's only right to suggest that we dare to have a picnic. However don't panic if you're thinking I'm mad at suggesting outdoor cake, as our wonderful venue has a back up plan in case the weather doesn't see fit to play along!

You don't even need to bring rugs and seating as the venue has plenty of proper tables and chairs to make sure we're comfortable.

In terms of cake, I feel a picnic theme is very open to interpretation (both sweet and savoury?) as what you food eaten outside doesn't count in terms of calories does it? I'm looking forward to some interesting cakey concoctions. Pimms cake anyone? Cheese and pineapple (without the sticks)?

Venue: Ouseburn / Quayside
Additional venue info: The venue offers hot and cold drinks, and alcoholic ones for those who fancy it. Cash preferred but they take cards too.

Newcastle Upon Tyne – Putting on your Glad Rags

April 10, 2015 7:29 pm in New events, Newcastle Upon Tyne by Iona

Date: Monday 20 April 2015
Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Theme: Putting on your glad rags
This month's theme has been chosen to tie in with a little extra special treat for those that attend. Local photographer Sean Elliot has agreed to come along (cake bribery!), and help us all learn a little bit more about food photography. I know a few of you are keen blogger / social media users, so hopefully you'll find this of interest!

So... it only seems right that cakes this month should be chosen with that in mind. Maybe you can make the most perfect classic victoria sponge, or an elegant sachertorte or just the biggest boldest BRIGHTEST cake ever?! It's up to you to decide but I look forward to seeing the results.

Venue: Ouseburn
Additional venue info: We've been here before and our host has kindly allowed us to return. It's a little out of the way but a lovely place with lots of character. Hopefully the weather will be kind and we can get outside as well!

Tea, coffee and soft drinks can be bought at this venue, but please note that it's cash only. Space is a little limited at this venue, so I'm afraid it will be first come first served.

Date: Monday 02 March 2015
Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm

As we're still a little bit dark and chilly around the edges at the end of February my thoughts always turn to cakes from my childhood and food that makes me happy and dream of the sunshine and warmth to follow in the next couple of months, so this months' cake club theme is 'Comfort Food'.

Bring out your favourites and share the cakey love!

Venue: Ouseburn
Additional venue info: Back at a venue that's hosted us so well before, this bar/cafe at the top of the Ouseburn has allowed us back through their doors.

Newcastle upon Tyne – COCKTAIL HOUR

September 23, 2014 7:04 pm in New events, Newcastle Upon Tyne by Iona

Date: Monday 13 October 2014
Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Theme: Cocktail Hour
Inspired by this month's venue, it's cocktail hour! Who doesn't love a cocktail? The nights are getting darker, so cocktails from 6 are perfectly acceptable right?

Bring along a cakey version of your favourite cocktail. Be it a dirty martini or a cosmopolitan, they're all welcome at cake club this month. I've gone classic with G&T but I keep thinking there must be a good cake version of a Basil Grande somewhere. Anyone up for the challenge?

Venue: Near Central Station
Additional venue info: This venue has only been open a short while but they're welcoming us with open arms. It's a 5 minute walk from the metro and bus stops so easily within walking distance.

Unsurprisingly alongside your classic teas, coffees and soft drinks this venue also serves some pretty fine cocktails. If you don't have to drive, I'd definitely not so you can take advantage.

Newcastle upon Tyne – Late Summer Picnic EVENT FULL!

August 18, 2014 8:23 pm in New events, Newcastle Upon Tyne by Iona

Date: Monday 01 September 2014
Time: 6:00pm - 7:30pm
Theme: Late Summer picnic
Well the Sun may have disappeared for a while but we can still keep Summer going with this month's theme. We're looking for cakes suitable for a picnic, be it a taste of Summer or a cake that can live through a car journey in a picnic hamper! Bring out your favourite memories of trips out to the beach, although we may leave the sand where it belongs!
Venue: Ouseburn Valley
Additional venue info: We're lucky enough to have been invited to the newest venue in the Ouseburn and very delighted to attend we are too! Hot and cold beverages can be bought, but I'd advise any guests to bring cash for ease.

We're a little out of the way of the metro system, but the Quaylink Q2 bus will bring you nearby and there's plenty of parking close at hand too.

Newcastle Upon Tyne – Cake Surprise

June 24, 2014 7:19 pm in New events, Newcastle Upon Tyne by Iona

Date: Tuesday 15 July 2014
Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Theme: Cake Surprise
After a couple of requests for this theme from enthusiastic bakers I'm letting everyone have free reign with wonderful cake surprises. I'm guessing that it could be unusual flavours, decoration, colouring or anything else that comes to mind,

My brain is already buzzing with ideas for hiding patterns in cake. Remember the GBBO challenge? - You could try a Union Jack in cake form, or a beautiful ombre design.

I've staked my marker already promising a stripey cake, so if nothing else come along and have a laugh at how it turns out!

Venue: Near Central Station
Additional venue info: A lovely venue that serves tea, coffee, soft drinks and something a bit harder for those who need it after a potential cake challenge! Parking is a little limited directly nearby but car parks are not far away, public transport is close at hand

Newcastle – The Definition of Cake

May 7, 2014 8:13 pm in New events, Newcastle Upon Tyne by Iona

Date: Tuesday 27 May 2014
Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Theme: The definition of cake
Well... what is a cake? That's the question for this month's event. How do you define a cake, or indeed how far can you push a definition? Give it a go and come up with something a little bit different or bring the perfect example of cake.

...cheesecake, barm cake, gateaux, ice cream cake (do you dare?) potato cake.... a few different options tot think on, but I'm sure there'll be plenty more from you guys!

Venue: Near Grey's monument
Additional venue info: This month we have a literary venue providing us with a home for our cakey delights, teas coffees and light refreshments will be available to go with along with them.

The nearest metro is Monument, nearest car park is Eldon Square / Haymarket, there are bus stops all around the area so hopefully an easy event to get to.
