As a newbie, I have a couple of questions about the rules on cakes if you wouldn’t mind providing me with some guidance please?
I was wondering if it’s ok to use square/rectangular cake tins and loaf tins? Many of the ‘vintage’ recipes I have found use these shapes of tins.

Yes to all of the above Stephanie. Not to be mistaken for tray bakes, which are not allowed.
Even a 7 ins cake will be big enough, people often want to try a slice of as many cakes as possible, and the 7in cake will cut into perfect ’finger’ slices.
