As a home baker, we need all the help we can get when it comes to improving how we bake. These 5 kitchen items are invaluable in my kitchen. They make cooking and baking a whole lot easier and saves me time. With better end results.

Cake Skewers

You will see in almost all baking recipes ‘Test the centre of the cake with a skewer until it comes out clean’. For me, these skewers are essential in deciding when my cakes are done and ready to take out of the oven.

I have a few dotted around in my drawers and utensil containers. But for some reason, not one of them is on hand when I need it. Note to self. Must buy more. Lots more.

I love the silicone kind. Very flexible. Enabling you to scrape all the cake batter from your mixing bowl. Reducing waste. Unless you’re like me and secretly lick the bowl instead. But seriously, I use several during a baking stint, and need lots more. It saves washing them up every time I need a clean one. Make sure they are of a food safety standard.

Mixing bowls

I have a variety of sizes. Mason Cash and Joseph and Joseph are my favourites. Each do a great job when using my hand held mixer. I’ve written a post about Joseph and Joseph  products such as their Nest mixing bowls, Rolling pin and Cook Book stand.

Joseph & Joseph Cook Book Stand

Cook Book stand

I used to have a vintage style cook book stand, but it kept falling over. It was more style over substance. But now I use one sent to me from Joseph and Joseph. You can read about it on my post I keep it handy and never bake without it.

Electric Mixer

I’m currently using a Kenwood major. My mother used a kenwood, so I guess I’ve grown up with them. Before I retired from work in 2007, I did a lot of research into what I was looking for. It’s been a workhorse ever since.

I had thought about buying an additional, but smaller mixer, to handle the smaller amounts of cake batter as I was always having to scrape down the sides of the mixing bowl on my Kenwood Major. I already have a hand held mixer, which does a great job, but it doesn’t free up my time.

In the end I decided to buy the Kenwood Flexible beater attachment instead and the problem was solved. No more scraping down the sides of the bowl. Even when wanting to bake in small batches. It beats up the butter and sugar to a light and fluffy delight in no time at all. In fact, it’s been a time saver. It scrapes along the sides of my large kenwood mixing bowl with no problem.

Be counterfeit aware

When buying any product, be counterfeit aware and check out the original product creator to make sure you are buying what you ordered. Make sure that silicone products are food safe. If you see an offer for large mixers that sounds too good to be true, then it usually is.

Cake skewers? Seriously? Cocktail sticks do it for me. I do love my Kenwood though. And disposable icing bags changed my life!
