Birmingham South & Central . May’17 . Best of British .

On Saturday a small group of keen cake makers met in a lovely British pub, to eat some very Best of British cakes.  The New Inn in Harborne played host, and in a very cosy nook we spent an enjoyable couple of hours over tea and cake.  Topics for discussion were varied, in fact I seem to remember a musing over Peppa Pig at one point, but invariably the conversation turned to how lovely it is, every now and again, to spend an afternoon eating really lovely cake.  Or, several slices of really lovely cake.

Debs brought along the quintessential British bake, a very patriotic Victoria Sponge. No matter how many different cakes there are in the world, I never ever think that you can beat a slice of Victoria Sponge cake, and this was a really really good Victoria Sponge too. { recipe // Mary’s Victoria Sandwich }

I decided to make the Queen’s favourite cake, a Chocolate Biscuit Cake.  Said to be the cake she loves so much that she will even take it on her travels with her.  Like Deb, I couldn’t resist dressing it up a little more patriotically, with a Union Jack constructed out of Maltesers and Milky Bar Buttons, dusted with a little gold, for a slightly more regal touch. { recipe // Chocolate Biscuit Cake }

Zoe baked a Rhubarb and Ginger cake, which happen to be two of my favourite flavours.  Sticky and beautifully moist, with the tartness of the rhubarb breaking up the sweetness of the gingerbread it was a very lovely cake.  { recipe // Martha Collison’s Rhubarb and Ginger Cake }

Sitting beautifully alongside Zoe’s ginger cake, was Tahiraa’s Parkin.  Similar to ginger cake, but with the addition of oats, Parkin originated in the North of England.  A wonderful cut & come again cake, and one I’ll be adding to my To-Bake list.  { recipe // Parkin }

A little more chocolate to finish with, and Michelle’s Chocolate and Vanilla Marble Loaf.  Temptingly decorated with more chocolate it looked so inviting, and was soon sliced and enjoyed not long after this picture was taken.  Another one to add to my To-Bake list.  { recipe // Mary Berry’s Chocolate & Vanilla Marble Loaf Cake }

Despite there not being too many of us, you can see we made a very good effort to enjoy as much of each cake as we could.
